I had the day off today so I made my rounds at all the local thrift stores and came away with 12 VHS tapes to watch and enjoy on my Toshiba TV/VCR combo.
We have the controversial french film Man Bites Dog, which I’ve heard about but never seen. Goodwill had a brand new sealed copy for a dollar. Then we have some venerable classics like Lethal Weapon 2 (the magic is back…), Total Recall, and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (which I’ve never seen if you can believe it). Also there’s Wrongfully Accused, a wacky Leslie Nielsen comedy, Bless the Child (never seen it), Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (“HEY DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY STAR TREK V TAPES LEFT?!”) , and Star Trek: The 25th Anniversary Special. Sadly it isn’t the incredibly pompous, and over-prestigious late 90s special that had Ted Danson, John Larroquette, and Kenny G.
The biggest prize of all was the Star Wars Trilogy boxed set from 1990. I like the blu-rays but it’s going to be fun to see the original versions on tape, just like I saw them for the very first time at my friend’s house across the street when I was a kid. The side of the outer box is all beat up but everything else is in pretty good condition. I’m looking forward most to seeing these, and also E.T. for the first time.
P.S. Poor Jimmy Doohan. He’s in the fucking movie and he has to go to a video store to get a copy.
